Xymbol is a division of AllAfrica Global Media, the largest electronic distributor of African news and information. AllAfrica works with partners and clients world-wide, aggregating news and information and distributing content via the web, proprietary distribution channels, and electronic information services. AllAfrica's website, allAfrica.com, is among the Internet's largest content sites, posting over 700 stories daily in English and French and offering a diversity of multi-lingual streaming programming as well as a 450,000-article searchable archive. The allAfrica.com website was built -- and continues to be maintained -- by the Xymbol/AllAfrica technology team, and is based completely on Xymbol's unique, open platform.
Xymbol was established to package, promote and extend the internet technology developed by AllAfrica. AllAfrica's operational priority is efficiency, and since the company's founding in 1999 a platform and a development methodology have taken shape that allow large, sophisticated web applications to be built quickly, maintained efficiently, and extended in an organic fashion.
Xymbol took over development of the AllAfrica platform, removed or generalized installation-specific features, documented the API, packaged the code, and released it -- as XML::Comma -- under the GNU General Public License. XML::Comma is now a free-standing project, used in a variety of contexts, and its availability and adaptability is guaranteed by its status as Free Software.
Xymbol's main offices are in Washington DC, USA.
